M3A1 37-MM ANTI-TANK GUN

The American 37-mm anti-tank gun was based on the German 37-mm Rheinmetall gun, but it differed in many respects from the original. It was much lighter, due mainly to the carriage M4 and later M4A1, but it was felt necessary to fit a five-baffle muzzle brake to reduce recoil forces. It was soon found that the muzzle brake wasn’t needed, but all guns produced after the first few were fitted to take it, and this changed the designation to M3A1. Unfortunately, this gun was soon found to be very inadequate as a tank-killer. Anything bigger than a Panzer III couldn’t be destroyed by the M3A1. It couldn’t destroy 2.5 inches of armor at 1,000 yards. Because of this, it was moved from European campaigns to Pacific. In the Pacific theater, it M3A1 was used for infantry support and firing HE (High Explosive) and canister projectiles.  It served throughout the war and was issued to many friendly countries during and after the war. It proved a useful and efficient gun, since it was used by smaller armies in the 1970s. 18,702 were produced in WW2.
